STEM MASTER PROJECT GUIDE

DOWNLOAD AS PDF

This page outlines how the STEM Master process works, what I’ll need from you, and what you can expect at each stage.

The aim is to ensure a smooth, focused workflow and the best possible result for your release.

WHAT A STEM MASTER IS

A STEM Master sits between traditional stereo mastering and mixing.

It allows greater control over balance, impact, and problem areas by working with grouped elements (STEMs), while preserving the character of the mix.

The goal is refinement and optimisation, not remixing - addressing issues that can’t be resolved with mastering alone, without revisiting key mix decisions.

WHAT I NEED FROM YOU

To begin work, please ensure the following:

  • A maximum of 8, final, approved STEMs (clearly grouped and labelled)

  • A stereo reference of the approved mix

  • Intentional master bus processing is included; final limiter removed

  • All STEMs exported from the same session start point as WAV or AIF files

  • Identical sample rate, bit depth, and length across all files

  • No limiting on individual STEMs unless intentional

  • The original sample rate is retained

  • 24-bit or above is ideal

  • Reference tracks (optional)

  • Any specific delivery requirements (formats, versions)

Please review files carefully before submission. Replacing STEMs once work has started may incur additional fees, as outlined in the rates & terms sheet.

THE PROCESS

Once your project is scheduled:

  1. STEMs are balanced and optimised into a cohesive master

  2. Masters are delivered for review

  3. Revisions are handled collaboratively until approval

Revisions are included, and most projects are approved within one or two rounds. The focus is on achieving clarity, impact, and consistency - not revisiting creative mix decisions.

DELIVERY & FORMATS

By default, final masters are supplied as:

  • 24-bit WAV at the original sample rate

  • An additional 16-bit / 44.1k WAV included as standard

Alternative formats (MP3, Apple Digital Masters, etc.) can be provided on request.

Projects are considered complete and archived one month after approval.

TURNAROUND & SCHEDULING

Turnaround times are confirmed when the project is scheduled.

Express delivery options are available, subject to availability.

COMMUNICATION

If you have any questions during the process, feel free to email or call.

Clear communication helps ensure the project moves smoothly and stays focused.

I appreciate the opportunity to work with you to finish your music and look forward to delivering masters that translate with confidence, control, and impact.
